Who is YHWH?

This question is posed by king Noah as He is looking to capture Abinadi and, in fact, this is a question that puzzles the minds of the wicked and has throughout the ages of the earth. The reason for this is because the wicked know nothing of YHWH.

Alma 17:35
1 Nephi 2:12

It is interesting to note how Abinadi tells them who their Elohim is. It is through introducing them to the law of Elohim known as Torah.

Why would he do this?

It is because he is introducing us to one of the striking and fundamental characteristics of our Elohim: His unchanging nature.

The purpose of this blog entry is to explore the nature of God from the framework of the 3rd Lecture on Faith in conjunction with Torah, which for the purposes of this blog is defined as every word that has proceeded from the mouth of God. This would include The Tanakh/Old Testament, The New Testament, The Book of Mormon, and much of the Doctrine and Covenants.

Why is it important that we know our Elohim?

Lectures on Faith 3:19

YHWH, our Elohim, existed before the earth was created and will exist forever.

Psalm 90:2
Hebrews 1: 10-12
Matthew 5:18

This last also teaches us that his ways are unchanging. A funny coincidence since the common interpretations of the New Testament favor a changing God.

This is not the only evidence that God and his ways do not change. Here are more from modern scripture:

Doctrine and Covenants 35:1

Wouldn’t it be good to find out what his unchanging ways are?

The purpose of this blog being to introduce you to our Elohim and the characteristics that he possesses, let us look at some of the words that he uses to describe himself to Moses and Ya’Sharel/Israel. Those who are saved are brought out from the gentiles and are adopted into Israel. As such it behooves us to know how our Elohim wants us to know him.

Exodus 34:6
Psalms 103: 6-8
Psalm 103: 17-18

Yeshua’s mercy is extended to such as desire to keep YHWH’s Torah.  These people are those with a broken heart and contrite spirit. Grace is revealed in those who do keep Torah demonstrating their broken heart and contrite spirit.

I think that it is really cool to note the similarities between this listing of attributes and Paul’s explanation of charity found in 1 Corinthians.

1 Corinthians 13: 1-8

Charity is the behavior of YHWH, our Elohim, and the end (purpose) of Torah. In Hebrew, the word for charity is Tzedakah which means righteous action and moral and just judgment.

As we have begun to explore, this unchanging nature is one of the striking and fundamental characteristics of YHWH. Let us continue this exploration of His unchanging nature.

Hebrews 1: 10-12
James 1:17
Alma 7:20

His ways are the same yesterday, today, and forever. His Torah is Eternal.

John 1: 1-2

YHWH, through His servant Joseph Smith, rendered a change to these verses that makes the eternal nature of Torah even more obvious.

Inspired Version, John 1: 1-2

Further evidence of the unchanging nature of God and his ways is found in the record of his dealings with those he calls and the patterns found in those experiences. To help us see this pattern let us read a verse and then examine what is occurring.

Moses 5:4

They hear the voice of the Lord.

Moses 5:5

They receive commandments and obey them (Shema).

Moses 5:6

They receive the visitation of angels and greater understanding due to their obedience to YHWH’s commandments not sacrifice specifically.

Moses 6: 55-68

Continued obedience brings about sanctification and ministration from the Lord in the flesh with an explanation of what Torah is for. Obedience to Torah is essential for receiving the three baptisms spoken of by the prophet Joseph Smith.

In light of what we have just read and taken with what we are about to read in Doctrine and Covenants section 88: 34-35 we realize that these baptisms are contingent upon observance of the ways of Elohim as revealed in his Torah. The three baptisms dealing with justification and sanctification works together as follows:

BaptismWay to Sanctification
WaterWitness of a Covenant to obey/love God. see John 14:15, Mosiah 18: 8-10
Fire/SpiritJustification. See Moses 6:60 above
Spirit/BloodSanctification. See Moses 6:60 above
Doctrine and Covenants 88: 34-35

This passage shows us that we need Torah to become clean. This is further supported by the Book of Mormon as we are about to read.

Mosiah 13:28

When taken in context with the passages cited above it in the spirit of reconciling the Word of God to itself rather than pitting it against itself (which one has to do if they are to stay within the mind and will of YHWH and interpret His word correctly) we can clearly see that the Law (Torah) plays a part in our glorification and thus in the glorification of the Father and the Son.

Moses 1:39

I can provide further examples of the same pattern throughout time. If interested get ahold of me through my contact page and we can discuss it.

Another thing which does not change is the life to be lived by those who are set apart unto YeHoVaH. These are defined in Torah/all things and reinforced by Yeshua/YHWH/YeHoVaH in every restoration. I say every restoration because Moses restored Torah as did Yeshua and Joseph Smith. I believe that another restoration is about to come under the direction of one mighty and strong.

Here are some passages that bring out another attribute of YHWH which makes it so that we can center our faith in him.

Alma 7:20
Numbers 23:19
Psalm 15

Those who dwell on His (YeHoVaH’s) holy hill will be those who are like him. Thus we see the commandment given both before and after his ascension to the right hand (same power) of Elohim.

Matthew 5:48
3 Nephi 12:48

Is it possible for us to keep this commandment? We have Nephi’s assurance that it is.

1 Nephi 3:7

YHWH condescended to become the mortal Yeshua to show us that it was possible to keep this commandment and to set in order his house under the guiding light of his Torah/Spirit.

“>Lectures on Faith 5:2

From this we learn the constancy, truth, mercy, longsuffering, and grace of YHWH upon all those who act upon Torah, aka His mind and will.

“>Lectures on Faith 5:2
Joseph Smith

There is a forthcoming blog post concerning the relationship of the Law and the Spirit. In the meantime, here is something that addresses this relationship.

How could we have faith in Elohim if he were not perfect in his justice not favoring rich over poor or Jew over Gentile or one nation over another? No one of sound mind would find a judge who measures the law differently from one person to another to be just. In other words YHWH’s Law does not change from one person to another. There is one law for Israel and for the stranger within her gates.

Acts 10: 34-48

Acts 10 has often been cited as the rescinding of kosher law but it is actually teaching us about this trait of God that is essential to believe in order to exercise faith in God unto salvation.

Here is another example of how YHWH esteems righteousness over blood descent.

1 Nephi 17: 33-35

The Lord esteems all nations as one only revealing his grace in those who keep his Torah, and by so doing showing that they love Him and want to be like Him.

John 14:15
1 John 2: 3-6

1 John was written after Yeshua was resurrected and ascended showing that Torah is still valid.

Love is the all encompassing character of YHWH, our Elohim. It is revealed in His mercy. It is revealed in His justice. It is revealed in His Torah. Torah is how YHWH, our Elohim, wants us to Love Him and our neighbors.

1 John 4: 7-8

Yeshua taught us that Torah shows us how to love.

Matthew 22: 37-40

Here Yeshua clearly shows that the principles upon which Torah rests are these two great commandments. In support of this is the Greek source text of verse 40. Let’s see what the Greek word behind hang means, from Strong’s Concordance

accessed via Biblehub

One of the sincerest displays of love is emulation. The pure love of the Messiah is found in us as we do as he did which was keeping Torah which made him blameless. This quality can be extended to us through enduring to the end in keeping Torah. It is this that Yeshua is referring to when he is speaking to his disciples the night before he became our Paschal Lamb as well as the ultimate Law of Moses Lamb.

John 14:15

It was this to which Paul was referring when he gave his explanation of charity, which in the Hebrew is rendered Tzedakah which means just and righteous action which is why charity is a list of commandments from Torah.

1 Corinthians 13: 1-8

Moroni thought that this knowledge was important enough to include his Father Mormon’s teachings on the matter even though there was extremely limited space remaining on the Gold Plates upon which he could write. Charity is the same, no matter what side of the world you are on.

Moroni 7: 43-48

All things will pass away but the man whose life is lived in Torah glorifies the Father continually and it will be well with such for all things must fail but Charity or the pure love (emulation) of the Messiah will not pass away.
